More About Lawrenceville, PA:
Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood is one of the largest in the state of Pennsylvania.
It lies northeast of downtown, and like many of the city's riverfront neighborhoods, it has an industrial past.
Despite the city considering Lawrenceville's three neighborhoods, there is little practical reason to distinguish between Upper Lawrenceville, Central Lawrenceville, and Lower Lawrenceville. Because of this, Lawrenceville is mainly regarded as being one large neighborhood.
The Lawrenceville Historic District, which involves most of the neighborhood, was inducted into the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.
Lawrenceville, with its rolling hills, boasts an array of outdoor activities. The Cowanesque Lake offers a picturesque destination for summer swimming, camping, hiking, boating, and fishing; the tree-filled hills provide a challenging hunt for hunters as well as a colorful site for autumn leaf-watchers.
In 1814, Lawrenceville was founded by William B. Foster, who later became Stephen Foster, composer, and musician. It is named for entrepreneur Captain James Lawrence, who famously died saying, "Don't Give up The Ship!"
Due to Lawrenceville's access to river transportation and proximity to one of the country's biggest iron-producing districts, it was constructed as home for the Allegheny Arsenal.
Pittsburgh annexed Lawrenceville in 1868, and one of the original buildings, a log house built in the 1820s, survives today at 184 38th Street. Lawrenceville was established as a borough in 1834 and was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1868.
A small section of Lawrenceville's zip code is shared with Bloomfield and Garfield, while its primary zip code is 15201. You will find landmarks like Allegheny Cemetery, Arsenal Middle School, Arsenal Park, and Doughboy Square in Lawrenceville. Lawrenceville retains much of its industrial-era aesthetic, with narrow row houses and old storehouses lining roads and alleyways.
Lawrenceville is now known as a premier dining, entertainment, and artistic area in Western Pennsylvania. Its main artery, Butler Street, can be found in several restaurants, bars, boutiques, furniture shops, and cafes.
Restaurants and pubs including Industry Public House, Coca Cafe, Piccolo Forno, and the Church Brew Works, a brewery that is housed in an old church on Liberty Avenue, are some of the most popular options.
The Lawrenceville community is a popular destination for food, drink, and retail, with Arsenal Lanes, a longtime bowling alley with a full bar. At the beginning of 2014, Row House Cinema opened up on Butler Street, a cinema that showcased popular classics and served craft beer at the concession stand.
Recently, Lawrenceville's nightlife scene has grown tremendously as neighborhoods and suburbs surround Lawrenceville, bringing residents to bars and music venues. 2015, the Moose Lodge at 242 51st street was converted to Spirit Lodge, a multi-purpose venue with two bars, two dance floors, a concert stage, and a pizza parlor.
Lawrenceville hosts Pittsburgh's annual Art All Night for amateur artists to exhibit their works for free in a warehouse open to the public.
Carnegie Mellon University reported that Lawrenceville experienced the second-highest real estate appreciation share in the city in 2007.
Many properties in the neighborhood now sell for upwards of $200,000. As a result of this growth, Lawrenceville has been known as one of the most gentrified neighborhoods in Pittsburgh: once a working-class area, the district now targets higher-income buyers. Additionally, more construction and more commercial enterprise have led to a decrease in street parking.
