More About Pittsburgh, PA:
Pittsburgh is the county seat of Allegheny County and a city in the state of Pennsylvania. In 2018, approximately 300,286 individuals lived within the city limits, ranking it the 66th-largest city in the U.S. and second in Pennsylvania, after Philadelphia. It has the second-largest population in Pennsylvania and the second largest in the U.S., with a population of over 2.32 million; Pittsburgh is the anchor of Western Pennsylvania.
Pittsburgh is located in the southwestern corner of the state at the intersection of two rivers. It has been called the "King of the Rivers". For its overwhelming number of steel-related businesses, Pittsburgh is known as "the Steel City," while for its 446 bridges, it is known as "the City of Bridges."
Thirty skyscrapers and two inclined railways can be found in the city, along with a pre-revolutionary fortification and the Point State Park at the rivers' confluence. The city developed into a critical link between the Atlantic coast and the Midwest because of its mineral-rich Allegheny Mountain area, which was desired by the French and British empires, the Virginians and Whiskey Rebels, as well as Civil War raiders.
Pittsburgh also produces necessary materials like aluminum, glass, and petroleum, and it is a leader in computing, electronics, and the automotive industry. During part of the 20th century, Pittsburgh was second only to New York City in terms of percentage of corporate headquarters; it had the most American stockholders per capita.
Steel and other heavy industries declined in Pittsburgh in the 1970s and 1980s, and thousands of white-collar workers lost their jobs when Pittsburgh-based companies moved out.
A population peak of 675,000 was reached in 1950, and then a population drop to 370,000 in 1990. However, this extensive industrial past left the area with renowned museums, medical centers, parks, research institutes, and a diverse cultural district.
In 2015, Pittsburgh was listed as one of the world's eleven most livable cities; The Economist's Global Liveability Ranking chosen Pittsburgh among the U.S. cities with the highest liveability rate in 2005, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2014.
